The best times for cycling in Mallorca

Although cycling on this Balearic island can be practiced throughout the year, from October to May are the most recommended months for this sport.

Bearing in mind that in the middle of summer temperatures can reach 40°C, it is highly recommended to leave the long excursions for spring and autumn.

Since the island enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine a year, cycling tourism in November, December and January is feasible.

What fines can I receive for cycling in Mallorca

In Mallorca, cyclists can also receive fines for behavior that the island government or the Mallorcan municipalities consider inappropriate.

For example, in Palma de Mallorca the local police fine cyclists for not using the bike lane.

To avoid administrative sanctions, it is important to remember that the regulations of many municipalities oblige to drive with the light on, and wear a vest or some other reflective element at a sufficient height to make you visible.

Since these are rules for bikes that each municipality in Mallorca can define differently, it is important to know the regulations of the municipality through which you are going to be cycling or, at least, ask local specialists in the bike sector.

In addition, it is forbidden to ride a bicycle in pedestrian areas, parks and gardens. The fines for not complying with this regulation range between €60 and €300.

Children under 12 years old are the only ones who can cycle in these areas, although only if they are accompanied by an adult.

This prohibition of not cycling through pedestrian areas, parks and gardens ceases to be applicable between 8 p.m. and 10 a.m. the next day, as well as on public holidays.

Another rule for cyclists to keep in mind is that the maximum speed on a bike lane is 30 km/h. If the bike lane is located on the sidewalk, the maximum speed for a bike is 15 km/h.

Another thing you should know if you are going to rent a bike in Mallorca is that the police can take your bike if it is chained to some element of urban furniture, such as a lamppost, for more than 48 hours.

It is also not allowed to use headphones or mobile phones while cycling.

It is also prohibited to move around in unauthorized bicycle carts.

To have two people riding a bike for individual use is also punishable in Mallorca

Dangerous places for cycling tourism in Mallorca

There are a series of black spots for cyclists in Mallorca which are very important to know about before planning a cycling holiday on the island.

We have, for instance, the Puig Major tunnels, which are especially dangerous for cyclists due to their lack of lighting.

The old Bunyola road has asphalt in poor condition.

There are large holes on the route from Lloret to Ruberts and the old Camino de Muro road.

On the Camí de la Vall de Muro before reaching the Inca-Llubí road sometimes the traffic signs are covered by the bushes.

Between Consell and Binissalem the road has practically no hard shoulder, while on the s’Esglaieta road there is a significant unevenness between the asphalt and the gutter.

Another case is that of the route from Campanet to Pollença, where the asphalt is also in quite a state of deterioration.

Insurance for bicycle tours in Mallorca

As a cyclist you are always vulnerable to any accident you may have.

That is why there are different insurances that cover the possible mishaps that occur when you ride a bicycle.

There are year-round insurance policies that, for instance, repair the bicycle on the road if something breaks when you are out on an excursion and cover a wide variety of expenses in the event of needing a doctor.

In cycle tourism excursions, it is common for companies that organize bike tours in Mallorca to include insurance in the price of the excursion, although normally this does not offer a complete coverage.

That is to say, the insurance of bike rental companies usually includes some cases and not others. It is for this reason that it is important to have your own insurance that can complement it.
